The cabinet dilemma

So we purchased a lot of cabinets to go in the bathroom. Since the house was built in 1938, it isn't to current standards. The doors are all varying widths. There is also a door at the bottom of the stairs that led to the second floor. This door width is 29 inches wide. We purchased kitchen cabinets for the bathroom that included a corner cabinet. This was our problem. It couldn't get through the door at the bottom of the stairs. Then we tried the window.

 The window didn't work. The window was wide enough to get it in, but then the depth didn't allow for the turn to get it in. So then they took off the door frame of the door at the bottom of the stair. But, it still wasn't wide enough.

Then it was decided to just cut off the back of the cabinet and reinstall it. This worked! Yay! It will be at the back of the cabinet...no one will see it. 

The rest of the cabinets were no problem!

Bathroom befores

Here are some photos of the upstairs bathroom before work started.

We saved the bathroom sink. It was in good condition and we like the design. It will probably be reused at camp in the future.

The former walk in cedar closet. It was nice storage space but access to it created a difficult hall space and weird angles in the old bathroom.

Solar panels

Last summer we had solar panels installed. We are taking advantage of NYS and Federal tax incentives. The panels are supposed to cover 93% of our electric bill. We have to go through a full year to see if we realize these savings. The panels are on the back of the house and on the garage.

The Bathroom Continues

We are not doing any fancy tiling -- but there is a lot of basic white tile around the tub nook. We are putting in electric radiant floor heat. The space is big and bright!

The tub is surrounded by white tile. The walls are a very light blue. The color looks white in the hallway but changes depending on the lighting.

Bathroom renovation

The existing second floor bathroom was not original to the house. It was done about 1970 without a permit. The existing shower was rusty and leaked. The bathroom was created by dividing an existing bedroom into a walk in closet and the bathroom. The wall was oddly placed splitting a double window in half.

We decided to make the bathroom legal and create a master bath. We hired an architect to draw up plans and are using a contractor who has done work for us before. They are a small group...and it is taking time, but is moving along. Here are some photos of where we are at.
