No internet...but in the house

We are finally moved in....still unpacking. We have no internet...so no posting for a while. Well we have some access when I make a "hot spot" with my droid.

Sunday, not a day of rest.

Today we took over two hillbilly loads to the Montross. Jason helped us on the second load. Now the ice house has only the few large pieces that the movers will take over. We still have some miscellaneous stuff to pack and the food in the fridge. The camper is staying at the ice house all week too.

Tracey got another coat of paint on the living room walls. The color doesn't photograph well. It isn't this bright and it looks good next to the stone around the fireplace. The patches over the old wall sconces don't even show.

At the moment we don't have any air conditioning. Lodi seems to prefer the basement where it is still in the low 70s. The first floor is a clammy 82.

And it must be at least 10 degrees warmer on the second floor. We don't have central air but will be putting in some window units. The city is a bit warmer than the farm.

Tomorrow the electrician is finally coming. They are replacing the service line and installing some bathroom fans and new outlets. Yippee.

Oye...paint and packin

We are probably the only ones who have moved in or out of Armonk in an open trailer. Neighbors must think we are hillbillies.

After unpacking at the Montross, I painted the ceiling in the kitchen and then gave the dining room and kitchen a second coat of the yellow.  Gina worked on painting closets upstairs.

I then patched the holes above the fireplace where there must have been sconces at one time.

The spackle was taking some time to dry so I painted the trim in the kitchen and most of the dining room while Gina kept painting closets and shelves in closets. Takes her as long to do the little spaces as is takes me to do the big rooms.

Our electric company came and picked up the fridge that the previous owners left that was missing its shelves. Con Ed has a rebate program for picking up a 'second' fridge. Instead of Sears charging us $15 to haul it away, they paid us $30 to haul it away.

We had another lovely dinner a la Trader Joes. I have never eaten so much food from the microwave in my life. Dinner is the one time we get to get out of the house and sit on our Armonk (trash) lawn furniture.

Rear yard
After a little dog walk, I got a first coat of paint on the living room walls. The color is a tuscan yellow.  At first it seemed like canary yellow...but it dried a much better shade.

After dinner..Gina painted another closet.

Yeller walls.

We didn't do any painting on Thursday. We just organized a bit and got home before 9pm!

Today, Gina brought over clothes to fill up some closets. I decided to put a second coat on the ceiling in the living room and dining room and then on to priming the dining room walls. Good-bye ugly green walls!!

This closet wasn't the worst. Some appeared to have the original paint still. This one had been painted...but still a very long time ago. They may have been white at one time.

Priming is fun!

Think we will throw out these shorts instead of washing.
I try to not wear the shoes off of the tarped areas. Leaving them untied seems to work.

Gina went to the farm house to do some packing while I started on the walls. The dining room and kitchen are going to be the same color, cream pot -- a light yellow.

The screens on the house are not in good shape and these blasted bugs keep flying around and getting stuck in the paint.

Painting ceilings

Today was a hot one...around 90 and humid. So what a better time to be on a ladder near the ceiling sanding spackle?  The previous owners applied spackle over the entire dining room ceiling but never sanded. So we needed to sand before we could paint. They did a decent job. At least I was using a wet sponge sander so it wasn't that messy.

I had about a 1/4 inch of joint compound in my bucket after the sanding.

While I had ceiling fun, Gina had the sticky job of putting down contact paper.

And the puppies took a nap on their cots.

Lodi and Ziggy in the living room.
They were able to hang out upstairs because the UPS man delivered our new air conditioner. The AC unit looks like the robot from Lost in Space. We are going to use this in the basement. It is also a dehumidifier.

I did get to painting the ceiling. We really wanted to get the living room and dining room ceilings done so we could have the movers deliver the big furniture soon.

I really like my telescoping paint roller extender. It really has been good.

We also patched some holes in the walls in prepping the rooms for painting.

This is our big push...really hoping to get as much painting done as possible.  We will most likely do the hallways at a later date. They will be easier because there won't be any furniture to worry about.

Can't wait to get rid of the awful color on the dining room walls!!

Second floor bedroom...essentially done.

Got two coats on the walls and one on the trim. The bedroom was a lavender color...and the windows probably were painted last in 1972. We still need to paint the inside of the closet, which is Kermit the Frog green. We also need to install quarter molding on the baseboards and when we do that we will caulk the baseboard molding and do the second coat of paint. That will have to wail until another day. At least it looks clean a fresh. It was hot upstairs...and seemed hotter looking at Artie's pool.

Second Floor Bedroom.
The second floor bedroom is blue with white trim. Looks like a beautiful sky. The floors are douglas fir.

Gina hit the kitchen..prepping for the microwave and getting the cabinets ready. We had to remove a cabinet to make space for the microwave/convection oven. Had to break out the multitool.  It did a good job.

Putting contact paper in the old cabinets was a sticky job and the cabinets are even smaller than the closets. Its the best we can do for now - not ready to tackle a kitchen renovation just yet. It is going to be tough enough to just get the painting done in time to move.

Second bedroom done!

Despite being at the house late last night, we managed to get there fairly early today and got right to painting. We mainly worked on the second bedroom, which was painted a light green and some grey/violet. The windows hadn't been painted in about 30 years. We think some of the closets have not been painted since the house was built.

While I painted the walls, Gina took all the closet shelves outside and painted them in the driveway.

Ziggy isn't too fond of the house and seems to be happiest in the car in spite of it being hot and humid today.

In order to save time we have been mainly eating prepared foods from Trader Joes that go in the microwave. All we have right now is a freezer, a small microwave and a mini fridge. The minifridge does keep our cheap beer from Trader Joes cold. We mix that up with veggies from our CSA. Good thing we have that this year or we probably wouldn't bother with the healthy foods.

We have been pretty pleased with the paint we got from True Value hardware. It was ranked pretty well by consumer reports and is a very low VOC paint. We got a great coupon and got all our paint at 50% off.  I do find the semi gloss is better than the eggshell.

We are pleased with the color of the second bedroom. It is actually a much lighter color than the master bedroom. We are using the same trim color throughout the first floor.

Yeah! A bedroom is done!

We 'finished' painting a bedroom. Well,... we need second coat on the trim, but it looks pretty good. Good enough to move on to the next room. We can always do the trim when we live there.  We need to get the walls and ceilings done so we can move some furniture in. I finished the other first floor bedroom ceiling today too.

Gina painted the closets...

The walls are really a gold color...don't look greenish at all.

Gina got the remaining wallpaper removed. There was 50+ year old wall paper behind the radiators and the mirror that used to hang above the fireplace. At least it came off pretty easy.

Not much writing tonight... the dogs kept barking when the fireworks were going off around the area which kept interrupting the painting and then our neighbors stopped by at 11pm. We didn't get home until after midnight.
